Reading
At Raysfield, we want all children to develop a love of reading and to use their reading skills to connect themselves with each other, their community and the world. We know that becoming an expert reader unlocks better life chances and can help to close the gap for children who experience disadvantage. We strongly believe that reading is a right for all, not a privilege for a few.
We recognise that secure foundational knowledge and skills are essential for children to become confident, fluent and increasingly independent readers. Our reading journey is therefore carefully sequenced, with a strong focus on developing and securing the essential building blocks of reading. Children are given the time, teaching and support they need to develop these skills securely; we do not move children on to the next stage of the curriculum if the foundations are not yet secure. Through ongoing assessment and responsive teaching, we identify gaps early and provide the support needed to help every child keep up.

Reading for Pleasure
We want children to love reading – and to want to read for themselves! This is why we put our efforts into making sure they develop a love of books as well as simply learning to read. Our staff love reading and recognise the importance of reading aloud. Teachers read to the children daily, so the children get to know all sorts of stories, poetry and information books. They learn many more words this way and it also helps their writing.
Our Project Based curriculum allows teachers to plan for the use of high quality, inspiring texts which support children in both their reading and writing.
We have a range of libraries in school where children can choose both fiction and non-fiction books. All books that the children take home are matched to the children’s phonic knowledge either through the use of RWI (EYFS/KS1) and using Accelerated Reader STAR tests in KS2.
