Key Concepts and Curriculum Skills

Curriculum Skills:

At Raysfield, we have a cross-curricular approach to our termly projects. Lessons are taught in a logical and sequential manner which enable the children to build upon their knowledge and answer the question at the end of the term.

There is a flexible approach to when subjects are taught within the timetable. It may be beneficial in some subjects to ‘frontload’ one subject at the start of the term in order to apply the knowledge in the second half of the term. For example, Year 3 will learn about light and shadow over the course of a couple of weeks for science and will then apply this knowledge through DT, making a shadow puppet performance. We find that having a flexible approach means that learning is more meaningful as it is being applied to an end product.

Key Concepts:

At Raysfield we have chosen key concepts (themes) for our curriculum which span from Early Years to Year 6. These key concepts allow children to continuously develop their understanding of a subject in depth, revisiting it throughout their time in school; this enables them to know more and remember more.

Our key concepts have been carefully selected so that they work alongside our ‘Respond to the World’ themes: Respecting our World; Respecting Each Other; Respecting our History.
